Many of the best pollinator plants are native plants, but larger nurseries often don’t carry many native plants. While you can certainly find some pollinator plants at a hardware store garden center (ex: perennial herbs, coneflowers), you may need to visit a smaller nursery or plant sale to find some of the other plants we recommend here (ex: milkweeds, bee balm). Luckily, there are some great local options for getting everything you need and we have listed several below.
You can also feel free to reach out if you are interested in collecting seed or getting cuttings/transplants from a garden in town. There are occasionally seed/plant swaps at events (ex: Earth Day) that you can look out for, but if you don’t see anything coming up then send us a message.
Mike’s Country Market & Nursery – 200 Riva Ave, Milltown, NJ 08850
This nursery is conveniently located and offers many native plants throughout the planting season. And if they don’t have a specific plant available, you can ask and they might be able to order it for you! They also sell other gardening and landscaping supplies that you might need (compost, mulch, stone, etc.).
Pinelands Direct Native Plants – 25346 Mount Pleasant Rd, Columbus, NJ 08022
Pinelands Direct specializes in native plants and offers a wide variety of of perennials for different habitat types (seed, grasses, flowers, shrubs, and trees). They are a bit of a drive from Milltown, but if you know what you want then you can place an order ahead of time.
The Native Plant Society of NJ – This organization is a great resource for native plant information and also has an annual plant sale (usually late winter) and seed swaps throughout the year.
Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve – 1635 River Road, New Hope, PA 18938
Bowman’s Hill is located in New Hope, PA and has an annual plant sale in early spring. The preserve has nature trails and educational resources so there are other activities to do along with purchasing plants.
